Living Room Layouts That Work With an L Shape Sofa

The same sofa can make one room feel generous and another feel crowded. It usually comes down to where the lounger points and what goes around it.

Here are the layouts that work in the most common Indian living rooms, and how to set up a l shape sofa in each one.

What an L shape actually gives you

An L shape sofa is a long seat with a lounger running off one end, so it wraps a corner instead of sitting flat against one wall. That single change does a lot.

  • Seating for four to six. One piece of furniture does the work of a sofa and two chairs, which is why it suits family homes and anyone who hosts.
  • Corner space put to use. The area most rooms waste becomes the most comfortable spot in the house.
  • A place to stretch out. The lounger lets you put your feet up without needing a separate footstool.
  • Room for two to spread out. Even with just two people at home, you can sit in opposite directions without touching.
  • Layouts you can change. Some of our designs are modular, so the sections can be rearranged when you rework the room.

The two configurations we make

  • 3 seater with lounger. The larger option, and the one to pick for a family room or a bigger living room.
  • 2 seater with lounger. The same corner comfort in a smaller footprint, made for apartments and compact living rooms.

Both come in our Zivo Plus and Cove ranges, so the configuration you need does not limit the style or the feel.

The square living room

The easiest one to get right. Push the long section against the wall with the most space and let the lounger run along the adjacent wall, closing off the corner.

  • Leave the diagonal open. Walking space across the open side keeps the room from feeling boxed in.
  • Anchor it with a rug that sits under the front legs of both sections.
  • Keep the TV wall clear, facing the long section rather than the lounger.

A 3 seater with lounger suits this room well, and the Duroflex Zivo Plus range comes in exactly that configuration.

The long, narrow living room

Common in apartments, and the layout most people fight with. The trick is to stop treating the room as one space.

  • Use the L to split the room. The lounger acts as a divider, with seating on one side and a dining table or work desk on the other.
  • Run the long section along the longer wall, never across the width, or you will cut off the walkway.
  • Go for the 2 seater with lounger here. Same corner comfort, smaller footprint.

The open-plan living and dining

With no wall between the two areas, the sofa becomes the divider. Its back faces the dining table and defines where the living room begins.

  • Pick a sofa that looks good from behind, since the back is on display. The dual toned finish on our Cove range handles this nicely.
  • Float it away from the wall and leave a walkway behind it.
  • Repeat one colour from the sofa in the dining chairs or curtains to tie the two zones together.

The room with a balcony door

Balcony access changes everything, because that path has to stay clear all day.

  • Keep the lounger away from the door side. Put it on the opposite end so nobody climbs past it.
  • Check the door swing before you finalise the layout.
  • Face the lounger towards the light if you read or work from that corner.

The family room that doubles as everything

Homework, television, guests, afternoon naps. This room works hardest, so it needs the most seating and the toughest fabric.

  • Seat four to six with a 3 seater and lounger, which is where an L shape beats separate chairs.
  • Add an ottoman on the open side for extra seating and a footrest.
  • Choose darker or textured upholstery. Cloudy Gray or the grey Cove combinations hide everyday marks.

Pair it with a 1 seater sofa facing the lounger and you have a proper conversation setting, or add a 3 seater sofa in the same fabric family elsewhere in the house for a coordinated look.

Picking the sofa itself

Two Duroflex L shape sofa ranges, and they feel different to sit on.

  • Duroflex Zivo Plus. Anti-warping solid wood frame, trusted Duroflex foam and good back support. Comes as a 3 seater or 2 seater with lounger in Twilight Blue, Dusky Pink and Cloudy Gray, with a 3 year warranty and your choice of DIY or brand installation. Rated 4.7 out of 5 from 478 reviews.
  • Duroflex Cove. Our newer launch, with a dual toned leatherette and fabric finish, bouncy zig-zag springs and 5 inch curated foam, in a 3 seater or 2 seater with lounger and a 3 year conditional warranty.

Cove is the springier of the two. Zivo Plus is the straightforward fabric sofa with solid wood underneath.

Two measurements to take before you order

  • The corner. Measure both walls, then tape the sofa outline on the floor and live with it for a day.
  • The route in. Main door, lift and any tight turn on the stairs. The sofa arrives in sections, which helps, but it is worth checking.

Why people choose Duroflex

We have spent decades working out what stays comfortable to sit on for hours, and the same thinking goes into a Duroflex sofa as into our mattresses.

  • Frames built to last. Anti-warping solid wood on Zivo Plus, because a sofa is only as good as what sits under the upholstery.
  • Foam we make ourselves, from the same expertise behind our mattresses.
  • Sit on it first. The store locator will find your nearest Duroflex store.
  • Help before and after. Call 1800 108 5008 any day between 9:30 am and 6:30 pm, or write to [email protected], and register your warranty once it is installed.

Start with the room

Work out the layout first, then the size, then the fabric. Do it in that order and your Duroflex L shape sofa will fit the room as well as it fits the family.
